Although we love our holidays in December, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind. At the Westport Headache Institute, we are all about keeping it calm and avoiding things that can trigger migraines. Here’s a brief video on my top migraine triggers.
Just to summarize the video above, here are my top triggers during the holidays:
- Chocolate – Consider eating non-chocolate treats such as candy canes or sprinkle cookies
- Stress – If you can, consider making to-do lists in order to plan tasks in advance
- Sleep Deprivation – consider going to sleep 30-60 minutes earlier than usual during the holidays. Also, try to keep good sleep hygiene — don’t bring your phone to your bedroom!
- Red Wine – consider vodka-based cocktails. Make sure you’re drinking lots of water — at least 8 to 10 glasses per day
- Caffeine – Avoid drinking too much coffee — for those coffee addicts like myself, consider alternating one regular coffee with a decaf coffee next
Although this particular article focused on addressing triggers individually, it’s important to note that the most successful approach to headache involves a multi-pronged approach that integrates wellness, mindfulness, nerve blocks, and medications when indicated. At the Westport Headache Institute, we believe that knowledge is power, and we hope to give you the tools and treatment to live a life free of headaches! Stay well! Dr. K
