As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, people globally are tasked with working from home for variable hours each day while staring into their computer screens, tablets or phones. Patients cite anywhere from 8-14 hours of screen time a day for work and leisurely activities such as binging their favorite Netflix show. Prolonged screen time in children has been shown to result in behavioral problems and trouble with concentrating. In adults, the negative effects of screen time include obesity, disrupted sleep, depression and anxiety. Too much screen time can also cause headaches and a be factor for worsening migraine. One of the cardinal features of migraine is sensitivity to light. Screens can exacerbate this light-sensitivity and result in an increased frequency of migraine attacks. Check out this article titled “ Screen Headaches and Migraine: Can You Prevent Them?,” medically edited by Dr. Deena Kuruvilla where she highlights strategies to combat these headaches.
