Hot off the press! We’re excited to note that Dr. Kuruvilla’s research article was just published in the journal ‘Headache’ — it’s entitled “Headache in Patients With Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Infection: A Narrative Review”. A special thanks to Dr. Kuruvilla’s past fellows at Yale — Dr. Tolebeyan MD and Dr. Cooper MD, who also authored the publication. A link to the article can be found on the Headache Journal website.

It’s important to note that COVID-19 has a number of neurological manifestations. In a retrospective observational case series, Mao and colleagues described neurologic manifestations among 214 hospitalized patients with a confirmed diagnosis of SARS‐CoV‐2;

  • 36 patients (16.8%) reported dizziness
  • 15 patients (7.5%) developed altered mental status
  • 6 patients (2.8%) developed acute cerebrovascular disease.
  • 12 patients (5.6%) had dysgeusia
  • 11 patients (5.1%) had anosmia
  • 3 patients (1.4%) developed vision changes

Headache can be an especially dangerous sign in patients with COVID-19, especially since headaches can be a sign of aseptic meningitis, which can lead to seizures and death. At the Westport Headache Institute, we take many precautions against COVID-19, but it’s important to recognize signs such as fever, chills, sore throat, nausea, or lost of smell. Stay healthy! – Dr. K
